"Journalists must carry out their work without risk to personal safety."
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay issued a statement on the death of Azerbaijani journalists Siraj Abishov and Maharram Ibrahimov in a mine blast in the Kalbajar region on 4 June.
"I am shocked by the news of the tragic deaths of Siraj Abishov and Maharram Ibrahimov. "Journalists must carry out their work without risking personal safety," wrote Azoulay.
The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) has called on the Azerbaijani government and employers to pay adequate compensation to the families of journalists killed in the mine blast and to provide life insurance for all journalists sent to the conflict zone in the future.
According to Turan, the organization also called on the Armenian government to provide Azerbaijan with maps of mined areas.
Azerbaijani Television operator Siraj Abishov and AzerTaj employee Maharram Ibrahimov were killed by a landmine while working in the Kalbajar region.
According to official statistics, 50 people have been hit by landmines in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan around Nagorno-Karabakh over the past seven months, killing 18 of them.
